Research papers - the use of bovine colostrum for human application

Below are a number of research papers (some very recent) relating specifically to work undertaken with bovine colostrum for human use. Some of the results confirm the benefits bovine colostrum can provide in assisting various human conditions. Other results are not fully conclusive but encouraging and support the need for further research.

Use of these research papers is to assist in understanding the potential of bovine colostrum and appreciate the complex and still largely understood nature of this early life giving substance. We have only taken some of the many hundreds of papers dealing with human application and acknowledge there are a significant number of papers relating to research associated with colostrum use for animals. Hopefully, some of this work will later transition to human studies and add to the already known health benefits bovine colostrum provides.

In quoting these papers we acknowledge that some of these works are protected and we have referenced the subject matter and sources carefully. The abstracts and papers are publically available online but if further referencing is required, please get in touch with us.

As with many complementary and alternative supplements, the use of bovine colostrum for medicinal purposes in humans is still undergoing research. We aware of a number of claims that have been attributed to the medicinal use of bovine colostrum. We do not believe the human use of bovine colostrum is a miracle cure and would be sceptical of such claims. We would rather refer you to the pool of research and scientific evidence available. Much of this research supports bovine colostrum ability to support the human immune system, improving recovery times post surgery or illness. There is also evidence (supported to some extent in the papers below) of its ability to support gut health and general wellbeing. More recently, there has been much mentioned of bovine colostrum in sport medicine.

Just as a word of caution: It is recommended that before commencing with a new supplement that you speak with your primary healthcare provider.

Bovine colostrum and immune function after exercise.
Davison G.

Strenuous and/or prolonged exercise causes transient perturbations in immune function. It is well accepted that this is one mechanism contributing to the higher occurrence of infection (e.g. upper respiratory tract infection (URTI)) in athletes, especially endurance athletes. In summary, the balance of existing evidence does support the notion that bovine colostrum is beneficial for certain groups of athletes, such as those involved in strenuous training (e.g. endurance athletes), in terms of immunity and resistance to infection.View abstract

Survival and digestibility of orally-administered immunoglobulin preparations containing IgG through the gastrointestinal tract in humans.
Jasion VS, Burnett BP.

Oral administration of Ig preparations from human serum as well as bovine colostrum and serum have been tested and proven to be safe as well as effective in human clinical trials for a variety of enteric microbial infections and other conditions which cause diarrhea. In infants, children, and adults, the amount of intact IgG recovered in stool ranges from trace amounts up to 25% of the original amount ingested. It is generally understood that IgG can only bind to antigens within the GI tract if the Fab structure is intact and has not been completely denatured through acidic pH or digestive proteolytic enzymes View abstract Reference: Nutr J. 2015 Mar 7; Department of Medical Affairs, Entera Health, Cary, NC, 27518, USA. Bovine lactoferrin enhances proliferation of human peripheral blood lymphocytes and induces cytokine production in whole blood cultures.
Zaczyńska E, Kocięba M, Śliwińska E, Zimecki M.

Lactoferrin belongs to the immunoregulatory milk proteins involved in iron metabolism as well in providing innate immunity to newborns. The protein has been the subject of numerous clinical studies. The results showed potent stimulation of the proliferative response of PBMC by bovine lactoferrin, associated with the induction of proinflammatory cytokines only in the case of colostral bLF. This observation may be of importance when high doses of bLF are used in therapy and by designing diet supplementation with this protein. Effects of bovine colostrum supplementation on upper respiratory illness in active males.
Jones AW, Cameron SJ, Thatcher R, Beecroft MS, Mur LA2, Davison G.

Bovine colostrum (COL) has been advocated as a nutritional countermeasure to exercise-induced immune dysfunction and increased risk of upper respiratory illness (URI) in athletic populations, however, the mechanisms remain unclear. During winter months, under double-blind procedures, 53 males (mean training load±SD, 50.5±28.9 MET-hweek(-1)) were randomized to daily supplementation of 20g of COL (N=25) or an isoenergetic/isomacronutrient placebo (PLA) (N=28) for 12weeks. This is the first study to demonstrate that COL limits the increased salivary bacterial load in physically active males during the winter months which may provide a novel mechanism of immune-modulation with COL and a relevant marker of in vivo (innate) immunity and risk of URIView abstract Reference: Brain Behav Immun. 2014 Jul. What's is bovine (cow) colostrum beneficial to humans?

Colostrum is the first food produced by mammals. This rich milk like substance contains a variety of essential nutrients, immunogobulins, growth factors and amino acids and provides the newborns with a boost in life. Bovine (cow) colostrum is found to be totally compatible to humans. Before the advent of modern medicine, bovine colostrum has been used for centuries to treat various conditions. The investigation of clinical effects of bovine colostrum in humans began in the late 1980s and continues today.

Research studies indicate that bovine colostrum may have direct antimicrobial and as well as other bioactivities that suppress gut inflammation and promote mucosal integrity and tissue repair under various conditions related to tissue injury. Bovine colostrum may also contribute to immunological events, resulting in systemic effects after contact with the gut mucosa. Bovine colostrum contains numerous factors attributable to the acquired and innate immune systems, including a range of peptides and proteins with direct antimicrobial effects.

How do colostrum products compare?

Cow colostrum products are not equal. New Zealand colostrum is known to be superior mainly due to the processing method, but also important is the fact that New Zealand farmers collect colostrum once a year during natural calving from year round pasture fed cows. The producing dairy herds have to be certified antibiotic free and free from hormones to be accepted for colostrum milking. Certification confirming New Zealand is free of BSE (mad cow disease) is available here BSE free certification. It is a fact that New Zealand has never had a single case of this disease. Both the bovine colostrum and the gel capsules carry Halal certification by the N.Z. Islamic Process Management Division.. To view the certification please click here Halal certification.
New Zealand cow colostrum is never frozen, only chilled and then spray dried at low heat, protecting the sensitive bio-enzymes. The colostrum is collected from all over the country and then blended together thus enlarging the exposure to a variety of pathogens. This results in a high level of variety of antibodies in New Zealand bovine colostrum. Most other countries collect colostrum from region specific herds thus limiting the variety of antibodies contained in the collected colostrum.

Health, sports and general well being benefits

A number of research papers have recently been completed which show promising results with the use of bovine colostrum in sport's medicine. Research studies found evidence that bovine colostrum helps in assisting athletes in achieving greater performance in certain track and field sports. It is also shown to help reduce recovery time from injury and in some cases, build lean tissue.

The unique compounds contained in colostrum assists in speeding up post training recovery and tissue repair.

There are a number of studies which report on the use and supplementation of bovine colostrum enhancing the human immune system, improving recovery times post surgery or illness. Boosting the human immune system helps fend off colds, flu and other viral and bacterial illnesses. Studies have shown that compromised human immune systems can benefit from the properties contained in bovine colostrum.

Colostrum is known to provide gastrointestinal support by maintaining a healthy intestinal flora and thus improving general wellbeing.
